I must say the whole experience has been completely different to how I imagined it would be. I was initially apprehensive about starting uni and leaving full time employment as I was used to having a normal monday to friday routine and steady income. </p> <p>In September I moved to Camberwell with a good friend so unlike others on the course I never had to worry about finding accommodation or struggling to live with strangers or in halls.</p> <p><span></span></p> <p><span><!-- more --></span></p> <p><strong><span>Autumn/Winter-</span></strong></p> <p><span>I think the introduction to the course was my favorite part of the whole lot, probably because it was also the easiest. I really enjoyed the separate workshops and felt I actually learned a lot of things I didn&#8217;t know before such as information on <a href="http://sgdgc.tumblr.com/post/11624214130/pmi" target="_blank">cropping</a>, layout, <a href="http://sgdgc.tumblr.com/post/11693357880/type-blog-task%20" target="_blank">type</a>, <a href="http://sgdgc.tumblr.com/post/12494047045/layout-grids" target="_blank">grids</a> etc. </span></p> <p><span></span>When we got the initial GDF PDF brief I was confused. I thought as we were put in groups that all our outcomes had to be pretty much the same. (Same company, Same Target Audience etc). It was only after a couple of weeks of trying to arrange group meetings etc I got told that I was actually allowed to go off in my own direction entirely. </p> <p>About half way through the first term my grandfather became ill and had to have a triple bypass. I spent about several weeks traveling back and forth to the hospital in oxford but I tried not to let this hold me back from working to my full potential. Luckily the ‘free days’ on our timetable meant I could visit the hospital without missing too many lessons. I told tutors about my situation and they were all really helpful so I didn’t get too ‘stressed’ considering the circumstances.</p> <p>Overall I was really pleased with the <a href="http://sgdgc.tumblr.com/post/13810043222/pdf-paper-prototype%20" target="_blank">Secret Cinema Outcome</a> and PDF for the 1st project and felt it was a good start to the course. I had never used indesign before so was happy with my grade as I had to not only make a PDF, but also teach myself how to use the software to do so. <span>I </span><span>found the feedback given from really useful. It was “</span><span>really nit-picking”  but that was a relief to me as I could use the comments to improve in future rather than getting no helpful criticism.</span></p> <p><span>I thought the VCT part of the course was quite disorganised, confusing and vague at times with several of the lessons I didn&#8217;t see their relevance to the essay. I did struggle with the essay but I was pleased with the effort I put in and with the results so I can&#8217;t complain!</span></p> <p><strong><span>Spring/Summer-</span></strong></p> <p><span>The spring and summer terms were different to the start of the course. At the beginning our hands were held and we were eased into the swing of things with lots of help. The second half of the year I found to be more independent which is not necessarily a bad thing considering that I’m not going to have a tutor to guide me through the rest of my life.</span></p> <p><span>I found the second VCT project to be a bit confusing once again. We were put into groups and the whole thing was really un-organis</span>ed. I had no idea what I was doing a lot of the time. A couple of group members gave no input which was disappointing but the remaining members stayed strong and we manage to pull together what seemed to be a fairly successful outcome.</p> <p><span>Our 1 week project is hardly worth mentioning as it was such a nightmare. We had two group meetings, one in which only half of us were there and the other in which it was only me who went!</span></p> <p><span>The GDA Mapping project was fairly smooth running and I didn’t really struggle with it. Once I knew what information I wanted to get across it was faily easy and almost enjoyable to find a way to do so.</span></p> <p>The industry led project was the project I was most looking forward to and also the project that ended up being the most disappointing. I ended up working with just one other girl and although we were both keen to do well, our styles and personalities caused us to fail to see eye to eye on a few occasions to the point that I nearly felt like giving up. </p> <p><span>Although this was frustrating i guess it was a good experience as in the future I’m not always going to get along with every person I have to work with so learning how to deal with this and compromise at such an early stage will better prepare me for upcoming projects (although in future I will stay away from group work whenever possible). It took us until about 2 weeks before the deadline to actually decide what we wanted our publication to be which added to the stress factor. Despite this we managed to pull the cat out of the bag and produce <a href="http://sgdgc.tumblr.com/post/23258438225/hato-press" target="_blank">something</a> we were both actually very pleased with. At the time it was a stressful and difficult project but I think it is also the project which I have learnt the most from.</span></p> <p><span>I’m currently mid-way through the final project of this year and all I can say is so far so good! I&#8217;ve got to push myself a bit to get up to the 100 outcomes but this is something i&#8217;m used to and I know won&#8217;t be a problem. </span>Throughout the year i’ve found it relatively easy to keep on top of things- something which i’ve struggled to do before at college and school. This is because I’m doing something which I enjoy and am interested in. I see no point in getting myself into thousands and thousands of pounds worth of debt for no reason.
